Turid Mjelve was a renowned Norwegian ceramist. She was particularly known for rustic ceramics in brown glaze and other earthy colors.
Mjelve was educated at the École des Arts et Métiers in Paris (1953) and from the State School of Crafts and Art (1954–1956). She established her own workshop in the capital immediately after school. She later moved to Son, where many of the applied artists of Eastern Norway settled.
Her early works are simple and sober with glaze in a restrained color scale. Beyond the 1960s and especially the 1970s, the ceramics took on a more rustic expression.
Mjelve is represented by a number of museums and has been purchased by, among others, the National Museum and the Norwegian Cultural Council.
